What Pirates Can Teach You About Price

In 1st century BCE Julius Ceasar was captured by Cilician pirates.  They wanted 20 silver talents ($330,000) for his release.

Julius Ceasar laughed at the pirates and told them they should be asking for at least 50 silver talents ($825,000) for his ransom.

The pirates were confused.  They had never met a hostage that demanded their ransom to be increased.

Word spread to Rome that pirates wanted a giant sum of money to release Julius Ceasar.  Ceasar became famous as a result.  People thought that he must be very special and important to warrant such a high ransom.

This event put Julius Ceasar on the political map.
